The National Science Foundation has offered five of its prestigious CAREER awards to faculty members. They are: Miguel Alonso, assistant professor of optics; Wendi Heinzelman, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering; Michael King, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; Hong Yang, assistant professor of chemical engineering; and Kai Shen, assistant professor of computer science. The CAREER award is given to promising scientists early in their careers and is selected on the basis of creative proposals that effectively integrate research and education. Each grant provides $520,000 over a five-year period to help the awardees develop their research.

Robert Dworkin, professor of anesthesiology, neurology, oncology, and psychiatry, received the Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award from the American Pain Society at its recent meeting in Boston. The award recognizes individual excellence and achievements in clinical pain scholarship.

For the second time, C. McCollister Evarts, Medical Center and Strong Health CEO, has received the John Charnley Award. Evarts and four other orthopedists were recognized for their work in helping to research, develop, and document proven methods for preventing blood clots, a potentially fatal complication that can arise after hip replacement surgery.

Howard Federoff, senior associate dean for basic research at the Medical Center, recently gave the keynote address at the annual meeting of the National Student Research Forum at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Federoff spoke about the importance of research making its way from the laboratory to patients.

David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities at the University and music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, has been chosen by the Monroe County School Music Association as the 2005 recipient of the Richard H. Snook Award. The award recognizes musicians who have made significant contributions to music education in the Rochester community.

Robert McCann, chief of medicine at Highland Hospital, was presented the 2005 Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians during a ceremony in New York City. The Laureate Award is presented annually to physicians in the United States who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research and service to their community.

Just seven years after forming, the Midnight Ramblers have been rated as one of the top three a cappella groups in the nation. The all-male ensemble from the University won third place in the International Champion ship of Collegiate a Cappella competition on April 30.

The Rochester Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa has given Richard Ryan, professor of psychology, psychiatry, and education, one of its annual awards for community contributions in education. The local chapter of the international association of education professionals praised Ryan's research on the nature of goals and human motivation as well as its application to real-life situations in schools.
