AMERICAN STYLE—On view through July 31 at the Memorial Art Gallery is a collection of eight oversized prints by Alex Katz, including Orange Hat (above). A High Style: Alex Katz's Ada and Alex Portfolio recreates paintings from the 1960s to the 1980s. Why duplicate already completed paintings in print form? In Katz's own words, “Prints are supposed to be, with my work, the final synthesis of a painting.” The portraits, carefully edited of extraneous detail, flattened, cropped, and blown up to a grand scale, combine characteristics of realism and abstraction in a way that recalls the visual language and scale of advertising billboards and movies.
