Experts to discuss child nutrition

The School of Nursing's Nutrition Weight Management Center will address the role of schools and health professionals in developing solutions to address childhood obesity at a conference Friday, October 7, at the Holiday Inn Airport. "Kids, Schools, and Overweight: Creating a Healthy Environment" is organized by the center in collaboration with the Monroe County Department of Public Health and the American Dairy Association and National Dairy Council.

The conference is designed for school superintendents, principals, nurses, physical education teachers, food service directors, health educators, and PTA members. The fee is $125 for the day-long conference. Group discounts are available. For more information or to register, call x5-1630 or x5-4761.

Runners, walkers wanted

Susan B. Anthony's "deadline dash" to gain women admittance to the University and her tireless efforts for women's suffrage are celebrated during the Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race: A 5K Run/Walk for Women's Progress on Sunday, September 25. Open to women and men, the event benefits the educational programs of the race sponsors, the University's Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership and the Susan B. Anthony House.

The race begins at 10 a.m. at the Susan B. Anthony House at 17 Madison Street, and finishes on the River Campus. Runners and walkers should park and register at the University and take a shuttle bus to the race start location. The last bus to take participants to the Anthony House will leave at 9:45 a.m.

In addition, a "Fun Run" for children 12 and under will be held at 11 a.m. on the Eastman Quadrangle. Participants are encouraged to register in advance, and team registrations also are encouraged. Register online at www.rochester.edu/SBA or on the day of the race from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. behind Rush Rhees Library.

Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes for the race. To volunteer, or for more information, contact the Anthony Center at x5-8799.

Walkway connects Eastman Dental

A new walkway is being installed to connect the Eastman Dental Center to the Medical Center Parking Garage and to provide easier access for patients with special needs. The bridge, when completed this fall, will include a snow-melt system to reduce snow and ice build-up. "We've been concerned in the past about the ease in which our patients have traveled from the garage to the center. This new walkway will eliminate the stairs for our patients and help save them time and effort," says John Borrelli, director of finance and operations at the center.
