Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow, is a living legend with a career that spans more than four decades. A singer and arranger, He is the dominant figure of postWorld War II calypso in Trinidad and Tobago.

Miguel Santiago Diaz, founding member of Ecos de Borinquén, was born in Comerio, Puerto Rico, in 1946. While the members of the group have changed since its 1978 debut, Ecos de Borinquén's mission has remained constant--to bring the echoes of jíbaro history to present-day audiences.
For the last 28 years, Ti-Coca (David Mettelus) and his accordion-led acoustic quintet Wanga-Nègès have performed Haitian twoubadou music in the traditional style. The group created a sensation when they made their U.S. debut at the 2004 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. "Masters of Caribbean Music" marks their first-ever U.S. tour.
The World Music Series continues Tuesday, January 24, with Huun-Huur Tu, the Mongolian throat-singers who return to Eastman after their sold-out show in 1996. Friday, April 7, Garikayi Tirikoti, master performer of the Zimbabwean mbira, offers both historical and modern music of the Shona people. The series culminates Wednesday, April 19, with Gamelan Lila Muni, Eastman's own Indonesian gamelan ensemble that features pageantry, music, and dance.
