Question about financial aid?

If so, visit www.rochester.edu/financialaid, e-mail help@finaid.rochester.edu, or call (585) 275-3226. First-time borrowers must sign and return promissory notes, which were mailed to permanent addresses in July. Mandatory entrance counseling can be completed by visiting the Web site.

Cogen makes progress

The University is continuing the upgrade to its Central Utility Plant to enable cogeneration, the simultaneous production of electricity and thermal energy used to heat and cool River Campus and Medical Center buildings. The installation of a low pressure steam turbine and a new hot water heating system are expected to be completed by the fall. The installation of a new high pressure boiler and steam turbine, both of which will generate additional electricity, is scheduled to be complete by summer of 2006. For additional information and project updates, visit www.facilities.rochester.edu/cogeneration.

Let's talk trash

University Facilities and Services encourages students to help reduce unnecessary waste by planning ahead, proofreading documents prior to printing, using e-mail rather than memos, and recycling when possible. Recycling containers are located at many points on the River Campus. For additional information, call (585) 273-4567.

Get buff

The Department of Athletics and Recreation offers many programs and facilities to help students stay active. Use of the Goergen Athletic Center is available to full-time students and members of the R Club. The department also offers 22 varsity sports and 30 club sports and is home to more than 300 intramural sports teams.

There are also opportunities for student employment. For details, visit www.rochester.edu/athletics.

Take care of those pearly whites

The University Student Dental Plan offers students cost-effective oral health care on campus. Students can choose either the Strong Memorial Hospital or Eastman Dental Center site. Preventative care and basic services, including check-ups, x-rays, fillings, and wisdom teeth extractions are covered up to a $500 annual maximum. There are no deductibles or copayments. The enrollment fee covers the entire academic year.

Call (585) 275-5000 or visit www.rochester.edu/uhs for enrollment information.

Help needed for SBA race

Volunteers are needed for the Susan B. Anthony Legacy Race on September 25. Anyone interested in working behind the scenes for the race can contact the Anthony Center for Women's Leadership at (585) 275-8799 or acwl@mail.rochester.edu.

Heard about the new check card?

Students working on campus can now have their pay deposited directly to a University check card that can be used anywhere credit, debit, or ATM cards are accepted. There are no minimum balance requirements or fees for those under 22. Funds can also be made instantly available at any Advantage Federal Credit Union (AFCU) location or other credit union–affiliated branch. AFCU ATMs are located in Susan B. Anthony Hall near the main entrance, Rush Rhees Library's tunnel entrance, and Strong Memorial Hospital's Crittenden Boulevard entrance. Visit AFCU at the Mt. Hope Avenue Branch or another branch to establish an account and receive a card and PIN number.

Lend a hand

Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong is looking for volunteers who are willing to provide companionship for pediatric patients of all ages. With a commitment of one semester, volunteers can assist with sibling care while a brother or sister visits the doctor in the outpatient clinic or help a patient pick out the perfect video as a movie room volunteer. For those willing to make a two-semester commitment, students can become a part of a team that works with patients. Contact the Friends of Strong office at (585) 275-2450 to arrange an interview beginning in August.

Join the club

Club Rochester returns on Friday, September 16, and continues on select Fridays throughout the year. Join students, faculty, and staff for a happy hour in The Meliora from 4 to 6 p.m. There are free appetizers and a variety of beverages available for purchase.

Land that perfect job

Don't miss a chance to network with alumni, recruiters, or potential employers. The Career Center offers lots of opportunities to get that resume circulating. Check out the resources online at www.rochester.edu/careercenter/students as well as events planned for the fall, including Career Day on October 12 and Career and Internship Connections events in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

Biology classes switch

In the past, biology students have typically taken Molecular Cell Biology (BIO 199) in the spring of their sophomore year and Biochemistry (BIO 250) in the fall of their junior year. Because principles of biochemistry have become increasingly useful in understanding advances in molecular cell biology, the biology department now recommends that students take Biochemistry before Molecular Cell Biology.

As a result, Biochemistry will be offered in both the fall and spring. Returning juniors and seniors who wish to take Biochemistry this year should plan to take it in the fall. Call (585) 275-3835 with questions.

Get the History Dept. scoop

Students who encountered difficulty preregistering for a 300-level history seminar last spring—or anyone interested in adding one now—will be glad to know there is still room in the following reading and discussion courses: HIS 302W, HIS 319W, HIS 332W, HIS 343W, HIS 356W, and HIS 360W.

The new president of the Undergraduate History Council is Robert Cavanaugh '07. Look for a meeting early in the fall to plan the year's activities, or e-mail Cavanaugh at rcavanaugh@mail.rochester.edu. The Verne Moore Lecture for the fall semester will feature Professor James Sheehan of Stanford University. Visit www.rochester.edu/College/HIS/index.php for more information.

History Opportunities for Undergraduate Research (HOUR program) enables students to earn money or course credit working with a faculty member on research projects. To read more about the application process, go to the Web site and click on "Undergraduate." Applications for this fall are due by September 15.

Interested in helping kids explore science?

Volunteers are needed for the First Lego League tournament held December 10 on the River Campus. More than 1,000 young people between the ages of 9 and 14 will work on teams to solve problems using engineering concepts and robotics. This year's Ocean Odyssey challenge requires teams to address issues affecting the health, biodiversity, and productivity of the world's oceans.

Volunteers will be needed to coach and mentor teams as well as provide support on the day of the event. To learn more, contact volunteer coordinator John Ballou at (585) 275-3954 or blou@mail.rochester.edu, or contact tournament director Jack Mottley at (585) 275-4308 or jack.mottley@ rochester.edu.
