Important Information for the Fall

Worms, viruses and other threats

If a computer is connected to the University network, it could be at risk for attack. Information Technology Services (ITS) provides network protection, but infections can come from many sources. Students can help keep computers and the University network secure by taking the following precautions:

Know the law on downloading and distributing copyrighted movies, music, and software. Not only is it illegal to share copyrighted files without permission, it can be dangerous. Viruses and spyware are often distributed by the same P2P services used for sharing files. Take advantage of the University's movie and music services with Napster and Cdigix.

Keep computer software updated and patched

Install and update antivirus protection. New viruses are discovered almost every day. Be on the lookout for suspicious files when surfing the Web and opening e-mail.

Protect passwords. Select a password that would be difficult to guess and keep it a secret. Change passwords occasionally as an extra safeguard.

Protect privacy by limiting online access to confidential information like credit card numbers. Review a Web site's security settings before transmitting personal information, and be alert for Web sites and e-mails soliciting confidential information. If it seems suspicious, it probably is.

Protect computers and accessories from theft and other physical threats by storing them in a safe location. Use screensavers, locks, and cables to protect computers in public areas.

Getting help

The ITS Center provides answers to questions about various technologies and applications. Located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library, the center is staffed for walk-in and phone assistance. For details, see www.rochester.edu/its/itscenter.

Computer labs

ITS operates several public computing facilities on the River Campus. The ITS Center Student Computing Lab is the largest of these facilities. For hours and a complete list of software, follow the links at www.rochester.edu/its/itscenter/gettinghelplabs.html.

Grades and online registration

"Access for Students" is a system that permits students to access their records, including grade reports, financial aid details, and billing account statements as well as review the master course schedule and course descriptions on the Web. To access this system (https://corona-dmc-3.its.rochester.edu/access/), students need to enter their University ID and a PIN number, which will be distributed upon arrival.

Computer sales

Students can purchase computers from ITS Computer Sales. For advice about current configurations, visit www.rochester.edu/its/css or call (585) 275-8353.

NetID

A student's NetID is the gateway to a variety of services, including e-mail, online registration, printing, and the River Campus wireless network. Learn more at www.rochester.edu/its/netid.

Networking and Communications Services

Students living in residence halls are provided on-campus digital telephone service, free local calling, voice messaging service, and 24-hour on-campus directory service. In addition, the University provides a high-speed data network accessible from residence halls and across campus.

Students can apply for enhanced voicemail and specialized services such as analog or ADA-compliant services. The University offers competitive long distance service, both domestic and international, through PAETEC Communications, and discounted cellular telephone service to students through selected providers.

The Standard Rate Long Distance Plan bills at an effective rate of 5.5 cents a minute. The PAETEC Personal Billing Number (PBN) gives students the freedom to place calls from anywhere on campus and works as a calling card when off campus. For information on international rates and other plans, go to www.campuslink.paetec.com or call PAETEC Customer Service at (800) 962-4772.

Equipment for people with hearing impairments is available. For information about amplification, strobe light indicators, and the use of TDD equipment, call (585) 274-4357.

For details on communications needs, visit www.rochester.edu/its/telecom.

Unwanted calls

The Federal Trade Commission supports a "Do Not Call" registry. Students living in campus housing who do not wish to receive calls from telemarketing agencies may list their campus telephone numbers on the registry through https://www.donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx.
