In Brief

Wireless pool plan saves money

Information Technology Services, in partnership with Corporate Purchasing and Verizon Wireless, has developed a new corporate-level pool plan that will save the University thousands of dollars each month. The plan helps eliminate overage fees when Verizon Wireless users exceed their monthly plan minutes.

With the new plan, unused plan minutes go into a general pool. If a user exceeds the minutes in an assigned plan, additional minutes will be taken from the pool, thus eliminating costly overage fees.

ITS has reviewed all of the plans currently in place and has adjusted those for Verizon Wireless users based on past usage. Additionally, ITS will review plans with Verizon on a quarterly cycle and will automatically move users to the most cost-effective plan based on actual usage for that quarter. All data devices (such as BlackBerry and Palm devices) have been assigned an unlimited data plan. ITS is currently working with Cingular to see if a similar plan can be put into place.
