Linking young women and science

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is sponsoring a summer program to encourage young women's interest in all areas of science and expose participants to the work of professional scientists and engineers. The Pre-College Experience in Physics (PREP) will be held July 5 to 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. This noncredit, commuter program is open to about 22 students who are completing ninth or tenth grade in any area high school.

Register for summer courses early

Matriculated and nonmatriculated students, as well as those taking noncredit courses, can register starting April 1 online, by mail, or in person at the Bursar's Office, 330 Meliora Hall, for College summer sessions. The four-, six-, and 12-week sessions begin the week of May 22 and end by August 11. The registration deadline for each class is the first day of class for each session. Play ball . . . without injury

With baseball and softball season around the corner, three sports medicine experts, including Tony Leo, head athletic trainer for the Rochester Red Wings, are holding a free seminar to help area kids and teens prevent injuries and improve throwing technique.

The seminar will be held Tuesday, April 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at University Sports Medicine, located at 4901 Lac De Ville Blvd., Bldg D, Suite 110, in the Clinton Crossings campus. It is geared toward male and female athletes ages 11 to 17 who participate in Little League, Pony League, and junior high and high school baseball and softball leagues. Parents and coaches also are encouraged to attend.

"Every spring, we have a flood of injuries due to throwing incorrectly, putting undue stress on muscles, ligaments, and tendons," says Michael Maloney, chief of University Sports Medicine and team physician for the Rochester Red Wings. "We hope that this seminar will help players perfect their technique, which will not only improve their performance but help prevent injury."

Andy Duncan, director of sports rehabilitation at University Sports Medicine, adds that athletes often try to immediately achieve the level they played at in the previous summer, which is not realistic after a long Rochester winter.

Participants are encouraged to call to register at (585) 341-9150.
