The Finance Department is sponsoring two training sessions titled "Reading University Ledgers, Request for Payment Forms, and Travel and Conference Forms." The University Eye Institute welcomes all faculty, staff, and students to visit its new optical shop, now open at the Medical Center on the third floor of the Wilmot Cancer Center building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. (Take the purple
elevators to the third floor.) A wide range of styles are available at reasonable prices, and all University employees and their immediate family members, as well as University students, receive a 30 percent discount on prescription eyewear. A grand opening, featuring a raffle, refreshments, and a trunk show displaying the latest spring and summer fashions, is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 28. The Summer Business Institute @ Simon offers juniors, seniors, and recent graduates of liberal arts colleges a three-week intensive immersion in the fundamentals of accounting, finance, marketing, and leadership taught by Simon School faculty. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from area CEOs in evening programs, shadow executives at their businesses, and visit companies. The program runs from June 5 to 23. The URMC Fitness & Wellness Center G-5680) offers children an opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy the summer with a variety of sport activities, swimming, and field trips. The Fun Fitness Camp is a New York State–certified summer camp for children ages 7 to 12 and is open to all University-affiliated families. The camp runs from June 26 through August 25 from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Cost is $160 a week or $35 a day, with a $5 registration fee and 10 percent discount for second and third children. Dwayne Davis of Facilities and Services and Hoss Firooznia of the Department of Mathematics are winners of this year's University Grounds Snow Contest. Davis's guess of 28 inches and Firooznia's guess of 25.4 inches were the entries that came closest to February's actual snowfall total of 28.8 inches. The two won prizes that included a small weather station and a garden ornament. The Commencement Committee is looking for staff and students to participate as ushers in the College Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 21. Ushers assist with final preparations, greet families and friends, distribute ceremony programs, escort guests to special seating areas, provide directions, and answer questions. volunteer this summer at Strong Memorial Hospital. Positions for retail, patient contact, clerical/office, and information desk/ greeters are available. Volunteers must be 14 years old by July 1 and available to participate once a week for three- to four-hour shifts. Sponsored by the Friends of Strong, the program continues for 10 weeks, June 26 to September 2. Positions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To schedule an interview, call x5-2420 beginning May 1. Endometriosis—The Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology is conducting an NIH–sponsored research study to evaluate treatment of endometriosis. Those who qualify to participate receive FDA–approved medication, seven office visits, free parking, and $250. For information, call x3-5734. Smokers Health Project—Men and women at least 18 years old are needed for a study about smoking, health, and quitting smoking. Participants do not have to want to or try to quit smoking to take part in the study. Volunteers receive information on how to stop smoking and up to $80 for participation. Bird Flu Vaccine—The Medical Center is looking for 250 people willing to roll up their sleeves and take part in one of two research studies of an experimental bird flu vaccine. Each volunteer will receive two flu shots, one month apart, and will have their blood tested so that researchers can determine whether the shots bring about an immune response sufficient to protect against bird flu.
