School of Nursing earns top certification

The School of Nursing is the only school of its kind in New York to receive Empire State Gold certification, an award given to recognize innovation and growth. President Seligman and Patricia Chiverton, dean of the school, received the award at a ceremony on Thursday, April 6, in Helen Wood Hall.

"We found a visionary leadership team, a collaborative culture, and a well-prepared faculty that is focused on student success," says George Hansen, executive director of Empire State Advantage, a public/private partnership formed to help build economic competitiveness and improve the quality of life in the state. The group conducts onsite reviews of organizations and businesses based on national quality standards, and awards the gold certification to educational institutions that have developed successful programs and practices in areas such as student achievement, staff effectiveness, operational efficiency, and financial results.

Hansen says a review of the School of Nursing revealed a "strong community and alumni support, extensive partnerships, and a high level of financial responsibility and stability." The school's track record in recent years of innovative programs and growth, adds Hansen, will help position it "as a vital resource in improving health care delivery, both within and beyond the greater Rochester community."
