Three Medical Center researchers have won the Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association's 2006 Distinguished Inventor of the Year Award for developing a key piece of the first human papillomavirus vaccine. William Bonnez, associate professor of medicine; Richard Reichman, professor of medicine; and Robert Rose, associate professor of medicine, won the award for their contribution to the vaccine, which is designed to prevent a type of cancer that kills more than 250,000 women worldwide each year.

Harriet Kitzman, a professor at the School of Nursing, will receive the first Suzanne Feetham Nurse Scientist Family Research Award from the Eastern Nursing Research Society in April. This annual award is designed to recognize a nurse researcher who focuses on the study of family and family-related research and who investigates topics relevant to individuals, families and their communities, health systems, and the environment as well as social and health care policy.

Irfan Rahman, assistant professor of environmental medicine, has received the Outstanding Senior Investigator Award for Scientific Excellence from the Oxygen Club of California for his research findings that suggests curcumin, a spice found in curry, and resveratrol, an antioxidant in red wine, can boost the effectiveness of steroids used to combat lung inflammation. Rahman recently presented his findings to the society at a gathering of international scientists.

Meridith Ruder, a senior social worker in Strong Memorial Hospital's emergency department, has been named the Genesee Valley Division Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers. Ruder was nominated by a student intern from Nazareth College. The honor recognizes her dedication to teaching, professionalism, and excellence in clinical work.

Curt Smith, senior lecturer in the English Department, has been named the newest member of the national Radio Hall of Fame steering committee and has been renamed to the Baseball Hall of Fame committee that admits a yearly announcer to the Cooperstown shrine. In addition, Smith has begun a broadcast column for the official Web site of Major League Baseball, MLBlog.com.
