Java taste test part of Fair Trade Week

Acompetitive taste testing of "Fair Trade" coffee by five coffee companies will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 28, in Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons. "Fewer than 15 campuses in the United States have gone 100 percent for Fair Trade coffee," says Sam Boyer '06, who hopes to see the University join that select group. "Coffee is by far the largest and most available Fair Trade product out there."

The event, organized by Boyer and the UR Fair Trade Campaign as well as Dining Services, is part of Free Trade Week, April 24 to 28, in Wilson Commons. Produce and other food items will be featured throughout the week. Starbucks, Java City, Pura Vida, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters will be the national brands competing at the tasting as well as Women's Coffee Connection, a Rochester nonprofit coffee company. The sampling continues until 1:30 p.m. and is followed by a panel discussion at 2 p.m. in the May Room about issues related to Fair Trade, an international campaign that promotes equitable prices for small farmers or cooperatives dealing in coffee or other products around the globe. The tasting event will be a contributing factor in determining which brand of coffee will be sold and served by Dining Services for the next five years.
