Eastman Dean: Committees launch national search

President Seligman recently announced the formation of a search committee to aid in the selection of the Eastman School's new dean. The committee, composed of faculty members from each of the 13 Eastman School departments, as well as a faculty representative from the College Department of Music and Interim Dean of the College Joanna Olmsted. A Board of Managers advisory committee will also support the search effort.

"I can think of no service that is of greater significance to Eastman in the foreseeable future than to help select its next dean," said Seligman in a May 2 message to the Eastman School community. "I am very grateful to the members of this outstanding search committee and the advisory committee for agreeing to serve."

The search committee will be chaired by Paul Burgett '76E (PhD), vice president and general secretary and also an adjunct professor of music in the College. In addition to Olmsted, members are Bonnie Boyd, professor of flute; Charles Castleman, chair of the strings, harp, guitar, and lute department and professor of violin; John Covach, professor of theory and professor of music in the College; Harold Danko, chair and professor of jazz studies and contemporary media; Richard Grunow, chair and professor of music education; Benton Hess, distinguished professor of voice and music director of Eastman Opera Theatre; David Higgs, chair of the organ and historical keyboards department and professor of organ; Betsy Marvin, professor of music theory; Bob Morris, professor of composition; Jean Pedersen, associate professor of history; Mark Scatterday, chair and professor of conducting and ensembles; Nelita True, professor of piano; Timothy Ying, cochair of the chamber music department, associate professor of string chamber music, and assistant professor of violin; and Gretchen Wheelock, chair and professor of musicology.

Seligman says he expects the committee to meet soon to review a description of the position and determine if a consultant should be hired. In the fall, the group will begin reducing the list of candidates to a group of finalists and conducting interviews. Finalists also will be interviewed by representatives of the untenured faculty, senior administrators, a student advisory committee, and the Board of Managers Advisory Committee that is chaired by George Hamlin, president and C.E.O. of the Canandaigua National Bank and Trust Company.
