SEEN AND HEARD
COMMENCEMENT 2006
egrees were conferred. Mortar boards tossed. Hugs shared. And lots and lots of pictures taken (and cell phone calls made). We couldn't capture it all, but below are a few moments that speak to the spirit of the University's 156th Commencement season.
Though an early rain threatened to mar the University's 156th Commencement ceremony, bright sunlight greeted the procession of students, faculty, administrators, and honorary degree and award recipients as well as the approximately 5,000 parents and guests who gathered on the Eastman Quadrangle to wish them well. A total of 1,094 graduates from the College received bachelor's and master's degrees during the chilly morning service. More than 2,300 degrees in all divisions will be conferred this academic year.
Above President Seligman takes a moment to shakes hands with graduates while leading the platform party along the Eastman Quadrangle following the College Commencement ceremony on May 21. Presiding over his first official Commencement, Seligman advised graduates to "beware the 'tyranny of the or' . . . that life is about tradeoffs, prioritization, tough choices. . . . In a well-rounded life, there is room for family, friends, community, and for many of you, for your faith as well." (Read Seligman's complete address online at www.rochester.edu/president/memos/2006/college_commencement.html.)
Nidhi Geevarghese '06 (above), who majored in political science and economics, hugs a friend following the College ceremony. Geevarghese's parents and sister made the trip from Long Island to support her on graduation day. The milestone event, she says, brought a mix of emotions. "I'm excited to be moving on, but sad to be leaving. I had a great four years here," adds Geevarghese, who is relocating to New York City, where she has been hired to work as a legal assistant in a corporate law firm.

The smile says it all. A School of Medicine and Dentistry graduate (left) anticipates his turn to walk the stage during the ceremony for M.D. candidates held on Friday, May 19, at Eastman Theatre.
