University wins IT award

CIO magazine has named the University a recipient of the 2006 CIO 100 award for expanding its high-speed optical network. Dell, Pfizer, and FedEx are among others selected to receive the awards that recognize innovation, business value, collaboration, and leadership within the information technology field.

Due to the increasing use of computer networks throughout the University and its off-site locations, Information Technology Services has been working to expand URNet, the "backbone" network that provides faculty, staff, and students with high-speed internet connections. In May 2005, the University became the first higher education institution in a metropolitan area of New York State to complete an optical network.

"We took a very innovative, cost-effective approach to connecting the University's diverse physical locations by combining our existing infrastructure with leased dark fiber optic capacity from Fibertech Networks and optical networking equipment from Cisco," says David Lewis, vice provost and chief information officer. "We are now uniquely positioned to provide the level of high network bandwidth required to support the complex needs of a leading research university with a premier regional medical center."

Recipients of the CIO 100 awards are nominated and must provide detailed descriptions of their projects and results. The submissions are reviewed by teams of CIO magazine editors and writers who vote on the final 100. The University was nominated by Fibertech Networks. Lewis will except the award in San Diego, Calif., on August 22 at the conclusion of the eighth annual CIO 100 Symposium and Awards Ceremony.
