Meliora Weekend 2006

cheerleaders at football game

Beautiful weather provided a fitting backdrop for the sixth annual Meliora Weekend that combines Reunion, Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Regatta. Thousands of alumni, parents, and guests made their way to the River Campus from October 6 to 8.

The three-day event featured panel discussions, live performances, outdoor parties, and the opportunity to connect with classmates and friends. The Yellowjackets, below, celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reunion concert for more than 100 current and former members. At right, cheerleaders entertain the fans in Fauver Stadium, where the Yellowjackets rallied for a 28-24 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Fareed Zakaria

Among the guest speakers was Fareed Zakaria (right), editor of Newsweek International and host of Foreign Exchange on PBS, who discussed world issues, such as China’s emerging economy and United States foreign policy in his talk titled “Future of Freedom.” Zakaria spoke to a capacity crowd in the Palestra: “I hope that 50 years from now historians won’t be able to say, ‘The United States was completely successful in trying to globalize the world. It’s just that in the process of doing that, it forgot to globalize itself.’”
