New computer virus protection

The University has acquired a five-year site license for Sophos Anti-Virus, a product that will help protect technology resources from viruses, worms, and other Internet malware and will significantly reduce costs. The new product will replace Trend Micro as the primary anti-virus product at the University and will offer added protection to those who operate on systems other than Windows.

The University began deploying Sophos successfully to ResNet students in August. Information Technology Services (ITS) reports there already has been an increase in the number of viruses detected and eliminated. ITS plans to expand deployment in two phases to include faculty and staff. Sophos software can be installed from a server and, in most cases, can be provided to a user’s desktop. Plans for distributing virus protection to the University community will be announced soon, with an estimated completion date of December 30.
