Important Information for the Fall
Mark your calendars
The Technology and Campus Services Expo will take place on Tuesday, August 29, 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, August 30, 9 to 11 a.m.
ITS welcomes you to the University
Computers, networks, telephones, and information technology are a vital part of your experience at the University. The staff of the University's Information Technology Services (ITS) department provides IT services and support to help you use technology to fulfill the institution's missions of teaching and learning, research, patient care, performance, and community service. Direct questions and comments to itshelp@rochester.edu or (585) 275-2000.
Protecting your computer, data, self, and community
If a computer is connected to the University network, it could be at risk for attack. ITS provides network protection, but infections can come from many sources. To learn more about spam, worms, viruses, identity theft, file sharing, and much more, visit www.rochester.edu/ITS/security. Students can help keep computers and the University network secure by taking the following precautions:
- Know the law on downloading and distributing copyrighted movies, music, and software. Not only is it illegal to share copyrighted files without permission, it can be dangerous. Viruses and spyware are often distributed by the same peer-to-peer (P2P) services used for sharing files. Take advantage of the University's movie and music services with Napster and Cdigix.
- Keep computer software updated and patched, and install and update antivirus protection. Be on the lookout for suspicious files when surfing the Web and opening e-mail.
- Protect passwords. Select a password that would be difficult to guess and keep it a secret. Change passwords occasionally as an extra safeguard.
- Protect privacy by limiting online access to confidential information like credit card numbers. Review a Web site's security settings before transmitting personal information, and be alert for Web sites and e-mails soliciting confidential information. If it seems suspicious, it probably is.
- Protect computers and accessories from theft and other physical threats by storing them in a safe location. Use screensavers, locks, and cables to protect computers in public areas.
Getting IT help
The ITS Center provides answers to questions about various technologies and applications. Located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library, the center is staffed for walk-in and phone assistance. For details, visit www.rochester.edu/ITS/itscenter.
Computer labs
ITS operates several public computing facilities on the River Campus. The ITS Center Student Computing Lab is the largest of these facilities. For detailed information on computer labs and classrooms, including hours of operation and software available, visit www.rochester.edu/its/itscenter/gettinghelplabs.html.
Accessing grades and registrar information online
"Access for Students" is a system that permits students to access their records, including grade reports, financial aid details, and billing account statements as well as review the master course schedule and course descriptions on the Web. To access this system, go to https://corona-dmc-3.its.rochester.edu/access. You will need your University ID and a PIN number, which will be distributed upon arrival, to enter the site.
Buying a computer
Students can purchase computers, hardware, software, accessories, popular consumer electronics, and more online or in person at the Computer Store. For advice about current configurations, visit www.rochester.edu/its/css or call (585) 275-8353.
