In Brief
Summer science program for women
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is offering a summer program designed to encourage young women’s interest in all areas of science. The Pre-College Experience in Physics exposes participants to a series of fun and challenging physics concepts and to the work of professional scientists and engineers. The program continues from July 5 to 27, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and is open to about 22 students who are completing 9th or 10th grade in any area high school. For more information and application forms visit www.pas.rochester.edu/PREP, or contact Connie Jones at x5-5306 or by e-mail at connie@pas.rochester.edu. Applications are due by April 30 and can be sent to the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Box 270171, Rochester, NY 14627-0171.
Lighted crosswalk on Elmwood Avenue
The University has installed a new crosswalk system that is designed to make one of its main pedestrian crossings more obvious to approaching motorists on Elmwood Avenue. The crosswalk is located between the Kornberg Medical Research Building and the central utilities annex. The installation is the first of its kind in New York and became fully operational in March.
The flashing lights placed in the surface of the roadway blink to oncoming traffic and automatically shut off after a set period of time, usually 20 to 30 seconds after they are initially activated. Pedestrians must walk between the automatic motion sensors in the designated crosswalk to activate the system. The sensors are located in posts near the curb on either side of the sidewalk, and on both sides of Elmwood Avenue.
New choice for coffee drinkers
Dining Services recently announced a Starbucks is coming to the River Campus in the fall 2007 semester. The new coffee shop, which will feature traditional espresso drinks, teas, and pastries as well as a new lounge space, will take the place of The Hive/Mel Express, a temporary take-out dining location on the third floor of Wilson Commons. The space currently occupied by the Common Ground coffeehouse on the first floor of Wilson Commons will become a sports lounge with arcade games, pool tables, and televisions.
