Summer institute lets students test drive a career in business
By Ryan Severson ’07
For most students contemplating graduation and an ensuing job search, the idea of trying out a career field before committing to one might seem appealing. This summer a select group of students and alumni enrolled in the Summer Business Institute at Simon have the chance to do just that and gain valuable experience in the process.
In this rigorous three-week program, Rochester juniors, seniors, and recent graduates learn the basics of business from area leaders and Simon School faculty. The experience has proven especially useful for those curious about a career in business but uncertain if it’s the right choice for them.
Jake Pylman ’07, an English and history major who participated in last year’s institute, says the program “helped me identify the options in business that match my interests and skill set,” says Pylman. “I plan to actively consider a career in brand management thanks to the experience.”
The institute offers sessions in a variety of areas, including finance, accounting, marketing, and leadership. Most sessions are taught by the Simon School faculty. Students also have the opportunity to learn from community and business leaders. By shadowing executives on the job and learning from the experiences of successful professionals during evening programs, students can gain valuable insight about a field of interest.
The program begins with an introduction to the basics of management and communication. Students get tips on how to improve their resumes and learn ways to make themselves more marketable to employers. During the three-week program, the students also take field trips to local businesses, learn more about consumer behaviors, and sharpen their business etiquette skills—and apply them when they dine with local C.E.O.s during networking sessions. There’s even time set aside for entertainment and activities outside the classroom such as golf and sailing.
The professional experience gained from the program is not the only perk. The Simon School offers a tuition credit equal to the institute tuition fee for those students who are accepted into the Simon School’s full-time M.B.A. or M.S. programs.
This year’s summer institute runs from June 4 to 22. Applications are still being accepted. For more details, visit www.simon.rochester.edu/other/sbi.aspx.
