Honors & Awards
The Students’ Association presented its
Professor of the Year awards on April 17 during the 2007 Undergraduate
Research Exhibition. The recipients, selected by student vote, are Douglas Brooks, professor of
religion and classics; David Foster, adjunct professor of chemical engineering; Steven Landsburg, professor
of economics; and Terry Platt, professor of biology.
Douglas Guiffrida,
assistant professor of counseling and human development and of educational
leadership at the Warner School of Education, was awarded the American
Counseling Association’s Ralph Berdie Memorial Research Award for his
research on advancing college retention theory and improving ways in which
counselors and other student affairs professionals prepare and support
minority college students. He received the award at the recent American
Counseling Association’s annual convention in Detroit.
Gail Norris has
been chosen to direct the College Office of Technology Transfer. As
director, Norris will develop strategies for the licensing and
commercialization of intellectual property developed at the University as
well as foster corporate collaborations and assist in the establishment of
start-up companies which use technology developed at the University. In
2000, she became the general counsel for the U.S. operations of Celltech
Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company based in the U.K. where she
was responsible for all legal matters for the company’s U.S.
operations. Norris joined the Office of Counsel at the University in August
2005 to assist the University with its business transactions, especially in
the area of technology transfer.
Glen Smiley has
been named associate vice president for advancement effective May 1. He
will lead advancement efforts at the Medical Center. Smiley brings more
than two decades of senior development experience in some of the
nation’s most progressive academic health environments, including
Duke University Medical Center, Baylor University Medical Center,
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Henry Ford Health System. He
most recently served as the president of St. John Health Foundation and
senior vice president for St. John’s Health, a nine-hospital health
system in Warren, Mich.
