More than $110,000 has been raised for the Jeremy L. Glick Memorial Scholarship, and the first two students to benefit from the fund were announced recently at the Fraternity and Sorority Community Reception.
Jarrod Parker ’07 and Karyn Schmidt ’07 are the recipients of the annual award that was estalished by alumni and undergraduate members of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity to honor Glick ’93, who died during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Penn.
The memorial fund is designed to recognize Glick’s leadership in campus fraternity and sorority life. He served as the president of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity during his senior year.
Pete Heinrich ’60, alumni advisor to the fraternity, says Glick appreciated the financial support that made his education at the University possible and would have desired this opportunity for other students. That’s why the scholarship is open to all undergraduate students and is need-based, he adds.
A selection committee composed of members of the Rochester chapter of Alpha Delta Phi, the University Alumni Hellenic Council, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, and Glick’s classmates and close friends made the final decision.
Parker, who is from Albany, is an Alpha Delta Phi brother majoring in social psychology. He has worked with the University Habitat for Humanity group and the University Outdoors Club. He also has been involved with the International Theatre Program, performing in several recent productions. This semester, Parker studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland.
“Jeremy Glick has always been a name everyone looks up to. He was a classy individual, a hero. He did so much for the school, within the school, and for the country,” Parker says. “To be honored in his name is very exciting.”
Schmidt is a member of Alpha Phi sorority, is a past vice-president and member of the Ballet Performance Group, and works at the Hartnett Gallery and the School of Nursing. The biochemistry major is a six-time organic chemistry workshop leader who has been conducting research with Professor David Pierce on Kufor-Rakeb syndrome, a Parkinson’s-like disease. She plans to purse a doctorate in biochemistry.
Donations to the Jeremy Glick scholarship fund can be sent to the University Gift Office, Box 270032, Rochester, NY 14627-0032.
