Series fosters dialogue on health issues
The Center for Community Health has introduced a new
series to examine many of the challenging health issues facing the region.
The series is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to learn more
about current strategies in place in Monroe County and how those strategies
are providing successful models to help address other growing concerns.
“Summer in the City,” a noon-hour panel
series, begins Tuesday, July 10, with a discussion on reducing teen
pregnancy. Sessions continue on July 17 with a talk about Rochester
Children’s Zone; July 24 covers HIV prevention; July 31 focuses on
closing the immunization gap for adults and children; August 7 addresses
the needs of domestic violence victims; and August 14 looks at ways to
improve access to oral health care.
“We hope to get a broad participation . . . and
we hope the sessions will stimulate more conversations on these
topics,” says Kathy Lewis, director of community health partnerships
at the Center for Community Health.
The center was established in 2006 to advance one of
the four missions of the Medical Center: improving the health of the
community. Working closely with local organizations, including the Monroe
County Department of Public Health, AIDS Rochester, the Latino Health
Coalition, and the African American Health Coalition, the center connects
people from the Medical Center to local agencies and initiatives.
“We serve a role in pulling together and
building bridges,” says Lewis. “We believe that there are many
opportunities for people to be linked with organizations and to build
effective partnerships.”
