Engineering for the Americas
Top engineering students from Argentina, Brazil, the
Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, and Canada, and from
Rochester and the University of Miami, gathered for five days on campus
in early June for a conference on global enterprises and sustainable
energy.
Rochester and Miami established Engineering for the
Americas and held the inaugural sessions this year. The students attended
both the Rochester session and a January session in Florida.
The program seeks to build international relationships
for the benefit of the students, their institutions, and their countries,
and to enhance the global community of engineers. Students addressed topics
in innovation, entrepreneurship, policy, and politics. They studied issues
around energy for the future and toured the Laboratory for Laser Energetics
and Niagara Falls Hydropower.
Kevin Parker, dean of the School of Engineering and
Applied Sciences, says speakers provided high-level, big-picture views of
international engineering, and views from small companies with
international engineering operations.
Parker noticed the students showed emotion when
parting ways. “They’re linked to each other as a group,”
he says. “This was quite an experience for them.”
