In Brief

Singers wanted
Like to sing in the shower? Then share your talents this summer at the “Eastman Summer Sings” series. Presented by the Eastman School, the annual series of choral music reading sessions opens Tuesday, July 3, in Kilbourn Hall, with participants performing J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor. The series continues for four more weeks; each program starts at 7:30 p.m. and is built around one or two choral masterworks. Scores are provided at the door.
Several thousand people have participated in the series since it was started in 1995 by William Weinert, director of choral activities at Eastman.
The performances are free, although a $5 donation is suggested, and refreshments are provided. Parking is available in the East End Garage. For more information, e-mail wweinert@esm.rochester.edu or call 274-1444.
Tour Mees Observatory
Summer nights are the perfect time to star gaze, and the University’s Mees Observatory is offering free public tours with telescope observing on selected Friday and Saturday evenings this summer. The observatory is located high in the Bristol Hills in a park-like setting.
This program is offered by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Tour guides are undergraduate and graduate students as well as local amateur astronomers from the Astronomy Section of the Rochester Academy of Science. Tours include an astronomy talk and a tour of Gannett House and the observatory. Skies permitting, the telescopes are expertly operated to provide excellent views of planets, the moon, star clusters, nebulae, double stars, and galaxies. Each tour’s capacity is 25 guests. Guests can register online for tours by going to www.rochesterastronomy.com/ur/public or by calling 275-4385.
Defensive driving course
A local business is offering a series of New York State–approved defensive driving courses at the Medical Center in July. Taking the course may allow some drives to reduce car insurance premiums and remove points from their license. The course costs $35. For a class schedule or to register, call (585) 905-9420. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Cardiology Unit.
Annual book sale
The Friends of the University Libraries will host its 35th Annual Friends Book Sale, Friday and Saturday, August 24 and 25, on the River Campus. Admission is free with parking available in University lots. Located in the Hawkins-Carlson Room on the first floor of Rush Rhees Library, the sale attracts donations and buyers from western New York. Hours for the sale are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, August 24, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 25. Books can be taken home by the bag at deep price reductions from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Proceeds benefit the University Libraries and their collections. For information about becoming a member of the Friends or about the sale, call 275-4461.
