University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
A wide range of events will be happening at
the University in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month,
September 15 to October 15. The celebration honors the cultures and
traditions of residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and
the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and
the Caribbean. Upcoming events include educational programs,
cultural celebrations, a major traveling art exhibit, guest
speakers, and film screenings. Listed below are some highlights:
Tuesday, September 18 Reimagining the Americas Food and Film
Series—Screening of the Spanish film De ida y vuelta (2000,
English subtitles). Meliora Hall 203. 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, September 25 Latino Cultural Fair—The University’s
Latino Professional Alliance presents cultural displays, music, and dance
performances. Flaum Atrium, School of Medicine and Dentistry. Noon to 4
p.m.
Opening October 6
TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and
Latino Art—An traveling art exhibit
featuring 35 artists from the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico,
Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile. Memorial Art Gallery.
Opening Party: October 5, 8 to 11 p.m.
Sunday, October 7
TRANSactions Lecture—Stephanie Hanor, senior
curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, talks about the
exhibit. Memorial Art Gallery. 3 p.m.
Sunday, October 14
Hispanic Heritage Family Day—A day of activities
for all ages, guided exhibition tours, music, and dance performances.

Thursday, October 18
TRANSactions Artist Lecture—Alfredo Jaar,
Chilean artist, architect, and filmmaker, speaks about his work. Memorial
Art Gallery. 7 p.m.
