Composer takes the helm as Eastman’s sixth dean
Music reigned supreme as the University officially
celebrated the appointment of Douglas Lowry as the dean of the Eastman
School during an investiture ceremony on October 27 in Eastman Theatre.
Performers included honorary degree recipient and renowned jazz pianist
Marian McPartland, the Eastman Jazz Trio, Eastman Brass, and soprano
Kathryn Blomshield Lewek, an Eastman graduate student, accompanied by
pianist and Eastman faculty member Russell Miller.
In his remarks, Lowry acknowledged the school’s
remarkable legacy as a incubator for musical innovation, carving
“a defining swath through musical culture since its
founding.” The ability to be “nimble and ultra-creative,”
to be visionary, and to be committed to “making music
matter” for future generations, Lowry said, will define the
school’s 21st-century evolution.
