African dance moves students
African dance is becoming increasingly popular at the
University, says dance instructor Karen Martin: “From hosting
internationally known artists from West Africa, such as Youssouf Koumbassa,
Nii Aya Tagoe, and M’Bemba Bangoura, to performing locally at
multiple schools and the Rochester International Jazz Festival, our
students have had a wide range of experiences that feed their interest in
Africa and its culture.”
That interest, says Martino, frequently inspires
students to travel to countries like Ghana and Kenya to learn more about
the people. The Akan proverb “Agromma,” she says, sums up the
cultural connections being created: “Children who dance and play
together are children of love.”
