Journalist Thomas DeFrank explores campaign

Thomas DeFrank, the veteran political journalist and
bestselling author considered among the foremost president-watchers in the
country, will speak about the current presidential race at the on Thursday,
Feb. 7. Visiting two days after so-called Super Tuesday, when 24 states are
scheduled to hold either caucuses or primary elections, DeFrank will
discuss how the results will shape the general election in November and
what they suggest about the electorate.
His address, “The 2008 Presidential Campaign: A
Reporter’s Notebook” begins at 5 p.m. in Rush Rhees
Library and is free and open to the public. At 4:30 p.m., DeFrank will sign
copies of his latest best-seller, Write It When
I’m Gone: Remarkable Off-the-Record Conversations with Gerald R. Ford. The talk is sponsored by the Humanities Project.
The Washington bureau chief of the New York Daily News, DeFrank has been
covering the White House since 1970, chronicling the resignation of a
president, the impeachment of a second, and two assassination attempts
against a third. The 2008 presidential campaign marks the 11th he has
covered.

E-mail delivery of microform material offered
The Newspaper and Microform Center in Rush Rhees
Library now offers free e-mail delivery of scanned microfilm, microfiche,
or microcard material. Requests for scans can be made online in the Voyager
catalog. Materials will be scanned, converted to a PDF file, and e-mailed
within 24 hours.
New blog for homepage redesign launched
As part of the homepage redesign process that began
last semester, a blog has been launched to allow members of the University
community to keep up with the redesign’s progress and to contribute
ideas, suggestions, and feedback. Become part of the discussion at http:

The Meliora opens dining room for faculty and
staff
Responding to requests for an exclusive dining area,
the Meliora has opened the Faculty Club, a 60-seat dining room
primarily reserved for faculty and staff. Located in Salon D on the third
floor of the restaurant, the Faculty Club is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Monday through Friday. The menu includes soups, salads, and hot entrees
served buffet style. Beer and wine may also be purchased.
Eastman Dental offers free screenings
The Eastman Dental Center is offering free periodontal
disease screenings for all faculty, staff, and students in February
and March. The screenings will be held on Monday and Friday mornings
and all day on Thursdays. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of
the gums, bone, and attachment fibers that support the teeth and hold them
in the jaw. To schedule an appointment, contact Heidi Lead at 275-1147 or
stop by the Perio/Prostho Department on the second floor.
Student blog shares Warner School experience
A new student blog, authored by “Margot,”
a master’s student in both the Reading and Literacies and Urban
Teaching and Leadership programs, brings the Warner School experience to
life and shows the school’s mission in action. The Warner
Perspectives blog, located at warnerperspectives.wordpress.com, gives
readers a glimpse into the life of a Warner student as she navigates
through a year of learning and growth on her way to becoming a teacher.
