University sets United Way campaign goal
President Seligman has announced the
University’s 2008 United Way campaign goal of $1.4 million—a
$70,000 increase over the $1.33 million donated last year by faculty,
staff, and retirees.
“As the area’s largest employer, the
community looks to the University for leadership and depends on us to use
our talents and resources both individually and collectively to have a
positive impact on our community,” says Seligman.
The United Way campaign provides support through
its unrestricted community fund to 99 different community programs, serving
over 500,000 people each year and 543 additional agencies through donor
designated contributions. Funding priorities for the community fund include
preventing violence, fostering student success, providing shelter to the
homeless, helping those with disabilities, preventing child abuse, keeping
seniors independent, and helping individuals and families facing crisis.
Costs and outcomes are routinely audited and evaluated
by the United Way Volunteer Board to ensure the effective use of community
dollars. By relying heavily on volunteers, Rochester’s United Way is
able to devote 100 percent of contributions to the Community Fund for
program support. Donations to other designated area agencies are charged a
modest administrative fee.
Already under way is a University United Way
leadership campaign in which senior level staff and faculty help to promote
the annual campaign. Beginning March 3, volunteers across the
University will distribute pledge cards to employees.
