Awards and Honors
Graduate students Benjamin
Castaneda and Dave
Duncan in electrical and computer engineering
and Fanny Lys Casado in toxicology have won an honorable mention in the
international Mondialogo Engineering Award competition. Partnering with
students from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, the team’s
project focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis
and cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Peru using medical imaging techniques.
William Fals-Stewart,
professor of nursing, has been awarded the Dan Anderson Research Award for
his study on the benefits of couples therapy in treating female alcoholics.
The award was given by the Butler Center for Research at the Hazelden
Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that helps people reclaim
their lives from the disease of addiction.
Elinor Freer and David Ying have received
a Special Recognition Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors
and Publishers and Chamber Music America as artistic directors of the
Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival, a four-week festival that attracts top
instrumentalists to the lakeside resort. Ying and Freer were recognized for
their role in expanding the festival’s repertoire to include
contemporary compositions.
Catherine Lyons, Margaret Carno, and Jill Quinn have been
inducted into the National Academies of Practice in recognition of their
substantial contributions to nursing either through delivery of care or
through education and research related to the care of patients.
Joseph Wedekind,
associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, has
been elected secretary of the Pittsburgh Diffraction Society. A scientific
professional organization, the society focuses on the use of X-rays to
investigate the structure of matter at the atomic level.
Richard Fisher,
director of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, was elected chair of the
Lymphoma Research Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board. Fisher, an
internationally recognized expert in lymphoma care and research, will work
with leading lymphoma experts from throughout the country to provide
strategic direction for the foundation’s scientific agenda.
