Traffic light approved for Elmwood Avenue
A traffic light will be installed in May after graduation ceremonies at the Elmwood Avenue crosswalk that connects the River Campus with the Medical Center, close to the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building. University officials have been working with City of Rochester and Monroe County agencies in response to accidents in the area, including one in which a car struck an undergraduate last November. The heavy flow of pedestrians and motor vehicles along Elmwood Avenue was evaluated in an effort to improve safety at the crosswalk.
Conference on globalization set for March
Nine nationally respected educators, authors, activists, and business leaders will convene for the University’s first Globalization Conference. The two-day forum, beginning March 31, will explore the impact of globalization on health, education, culture, and the environment. For more information, visit www.rochester.edu/warner/globalization.
Enter the creative excellence award contest
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit poetry, fiction, fine arts, photography, or a personal essay dealing with human values in health care as part of the Creative Excellence Award contest sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Cluster for Human Values in Health Care. Laser Lab holds high school summer research program
As part of the high school summer research program of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, about a dozen area students will spend eight weeks working on projects related to the 60-beam OMEGA laser, the world’s most powerful fusion laser, and the OMEGA EP laser, currently under construction. Applications are available online at www.lle.rochester.edu and must be submitted by March 21.
Eastman Dental offers free screenings
The Eastman Dental Center is offering free periodontal disease screenings for all faculty, staff, and students in March and April. The screenings will be held on Monday and Friday mornings and all day on Thursdays. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, bone, and attachment fibers that support the teeth and hold them in the jaw. To schedule an appointment, contact Heidi Lead at 275-1147 or stop the Perio/Prostho Department on the second floor.
Business leaders group partners with Center for Entrepreneurship
The Western New York Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organization, a global network of business leaders, is partnering with the Center for Entrepreneurship to improve the state of entrepreneurship in the region. The local chapter includes about 22 entrepreneurs from Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. Membership is limited to individuals under the age of 50 who own businesses with annual revenues of more than $1 million.
Summer Business Institute @ Simon
