Two of the University’s newest buildings have earned design awards from the Rochester chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
The Robert L. Sproull Center for Ultra High Intensity Laser Research, an addition to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics on the South Campus, and the Robert B. Goergen Hall for Biomedical Engineering and Optics on the River Campus were singled out at an awards ceremony March 1.

SWBR Architects designed the Sproull Center, named for the University’s seventh president and physicist Robert Sproull. The Rochester firm also served as the associate architect for Goergen Hall. Perkins Will of Boston acted as the lead architect on Goergen Hall. Rochester-based LeChase Construction Services built both structures.
Award judges credited Goergen Hall, named in honor of University trustee and alumnus Robert Goergen ‘60, with creating collaborative areas for students and engaging the academic community through its design. The dramatic use of daylight “emphasizes compelling interior space,” the judges remarked.
The Sproull Center was lauded for its “well-detailed curtain wall façade and a magnetic entrance piece. ”The addition serves as an integral part of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, home to the world’s most powerful laser, Omega, which scientists from around the nation utilize in their quest to develop nuclear fusion as a reliable energy source.
