Brizard to address city school reform
june.avignone@rochester.edu
Jean-Claude Brizard became Rochester’s
superintendent of schools on January 2, 2008, and has already
“forged a unique kinship” with the city, according to the
Democrat and Chronicle.
Jean-Claude Brizard
Brizard will talk about the framework needed to reform
the city school system, where only 53 percent of public school students
graduate from high school at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the
Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library.
Brizard’s plans include mandating a uniform
curriculum for the lowest-performing schools, creating a culture of
accountability, expanding programs for gifted students, creating a host of
alternative programs at the high school level, slashing the central
bureaucracy, and strengthening guidance counseling.
Prior to coming to Rochester, Brizard, a 21-year
career veteran of the New York City public school system, served as senior
executive for policy and sustainability, developing policies related to
“portfolio schools,” including small schools, career and
technical education, gifted and talented programs, and prekindergarten.
The event is sponsored by the Warner School. To RSVP
or for questions about accessibility and parking, contact Phillip White
at p.white@warner.rochester.edu by May 2, 2008.
