New statue, spaces debut during Meliora Weekend
A celebration marked the dedication of a new
statue of George Eastman in Eastman Quadrangle honoring the legacy of
Eastman, who established the Eastman School of Music as a University
unit and also was a leading benefactor behind the Eastman Dental
Center, School of Medicine and Dentistry and Medical Center, and the
campaign to establish the River Campus. From left, trustees and George
Eastman Circle charter members Larry Bloch ’75, his wife, Cindy; Gwen
Meltzer Greene’65; and Tom Sloan ’65, ’67(MS) introduce the new statue
as Jim Thompson, chief advancement officer, looks on. The Blochs
provided the support for the statue, which was sculpted by noted artist
and former Rochester student Marc Mellon.
Nearly 6,000 people were on hand October 8–11 to celebrate the ninth
annual Meliora Weekend, which featured the presentation of a new statue
honoring the legacy of George Eastman, the much-anticipated debut of
Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, the formal dedication of the Edmund A.
Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and many
