Data center earns recognition for energy efficiency
The University has received $168,000 through NYSEG/RG&E's Commercial andIndustrial Rebate Program for leadership in data center energy efficiency. The rebate corresponds with the University's use of OptiCool modular cooling technology, a locally produced innovation that has helped significantly reduce energy use and costs in the University's second data center.
2013 Best Translated Book Award finalists named
Foundation announced the finalists for the 2013 Best Translated Book Award for fiction and poetry. The list of nominees is available at the Three Percent website, www.rochester.edu/College/translation/threepercent. Winning works will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, as part of the PEN World Voices/CLMP Fest in New York City.
Resource helps students ID nonacademic careers
The University is offering a web-based resource that aims to demystify nonacademic careers by helping identify professions that use the skills students develop in graduate school. The Versatile PhD, an online resource that’s currently targeted at humanists and social scientists, has a forum for science, technology, engineering, and math students. Enter your NetID and password and create a user name and password for the program by clicking “Register Here.” The site is open to the University community.
Applications open for Fulbright U.S. scholar program
The Fulbright Commission has introduced new programs for U.S. scholars, including scholarships for short-term visits, early career scholars, and supplemental income grants. New service offered to secure email messages
University policy states that email containing confidential or legally restricted information should be sent securely. SecureMail, which encrypts email messages and attachments, is now available to all University Exchange and Zimbra users, in addition to the Medical Center. Summer sports camps offered
The University is offering a variety of summer sports camps for children ages 6 to 18. Most camps include one-week sessions; multiple sessions are available for several camps. Overnights camps are also available. University coaching professionals instruct the camps, and counselors are student athletes in their respective sports. Annual Discovery Ball set for May 11
The Wilmot Cancer Center’s 14th annual Discovery Ball will be held Saturday, May 11, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. This year’s fundraiser, chaired by Jeffrey and Patrice Pierce, will honor a two-time cancer survivor and mother, Georgiana Zicari, with the Inspiration Award. Flexible spending account— use it so you don’t lose it
It’s not too late to submit claims to your 2012 flexible spending account (FSA). The deadline is April 30 to submit claims to PayFlex (for Aetna members) or EBS-RMSCO (for Excellus members) for expenses incurred during 2012. The Common Market in Wilson Commons is selling spring flowers to brighten up your office: kalanchoes are $4.99 plus tax, cyclamens are $7.99 plus tax, and hydrangeas are $11.99 plus tax. The Common Market accepts cash and credit (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover).
Clothing drive for Jefferson Avenue Daycare Center
The Healthcare Technology Youth Apprenticeship Program and the Office of Human Resources Organizational Development and Staff Diversity are sponsoring a clothing drive to support the Jefferson Avenue Daycare Center, which provides care and educational skills to families and children between the ages of 3 months to 10 years. Boxes have been placed in the main cafeteria of Strong Memorial Hospital by the vending machines to collect donations until April 19. The center needs clothing items in various sizes for girls and boys. Baby wipes, diapers (size 4, 5, 6, and Pull-Ups size 5 and 6), socks, sippy cups (with soft tips), bibs, and crib sheets are also needed. New website includes IT service outage information
The University IT Help Desk has introduced a new website that aims to better communicate IT service outages, disruptions, and maintenance with the University community. IT Notices, available at www.rochester.edu/it/notices, replaces the IT Emergency Notification System. Staff and faculty who want to receive the latest IT notices by email can subscribe on the site. All community members who already receive email notifications about these activities will continue to receive them; no action is required.
Fringe Festival deadline extended
The submission deadline has been extended to midnight Friday, April 19, for the 2013 Rochester Fringe Festival. University performers are encouraged to participate in the festival, which will feature 10 days of performing and visual arts. Apply online at http://backstage.rochesterfringe.com.
