Diversity Events Calendar
All ages are invited to this annual celebration of Kwanzaa, the pan-African cultural holiday.
At 2 pm, special guest Dr. Maulana Karenga will speak on "Celebrating and Living Kwanzaa: Sowing and Harvesting Seeds of Good." Professor and chair of Africana Studies at California State University-Long Beach, Dr. Karenga is the creator of Kwanzaa and the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles) and author of the authoritative text Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture. The afternoon also includes art activities, a performance by Mounafanyi Drum and Dance Ensemble, storytelling by Yvonne Koketso Ferreira of Gazelle Tales International, an Afrocentric fashion presentation, live music by pianist Deborah Cox, dances by the Panamanian Group of Rochester, an educational talk by Rev. William Cobb on African American historical figure Bishop Richard Allen, "Africa en America Latina" dance performance by Ave. D Recreation Center youth, and a ceremony led by Dr. David Anderson.
