'Members of the Collective Gran Fury in Conversation' in conjunction with the AIDS posters exhibit:

Gran Fury, an affinity group of ACT UP, created iconic images that branded the AIDS activist movement in the late 1980s and early 90s. Responding to the Reagan Administration?s silence about AIDS, as well as to the stigmatization of people with HIV, Gran Fury sought to make visible the social and political dimensions of the pandemic. Beginning with Xeroxes and wheat paste, they plastered flyers throughout downtown Manhattan in conjunction with ACT UP demonstrations. Eventually, with funding from art institutions, they designed billboards for conventional ad spaces. With stylish, smart and provocative text and image,

Gran Fury sought to commander attention to advance the public discourse around AIDS. Collective members Loring McAlpin and John Lindell will show images of Gran Fury?s work, some of which are featured in the exhibition Picturing AIDS and Its Publics: Educational Posters from the Atwater Collection, on view in the Rush Rhees Library?s Department of Rare Books & Special Collections.

This talk is free and open to the public.

Ognian Hishow, senior research associate, German Institute for Interanational and Security Affairs, Berlin. "The Debt Crisis and the Bumpy Road Ahead: Is Europe Stretched Too Thin?"

One and a half years after the European debt crisis unfolded there is little progress in solving it. Unless the fundamentals of the Eurozone are addressed, economists predict a prolonged period of sluggish growth and social tensions in many member states. Some commentators do not rule out a break-up of the Eurozone. The challenges ahead are amplified by the simultaneous increase in expected lifespan and in the average age of the population. An age of diminishing expectations is looming.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. For lunch reservations, call the Skalny Center at (585) 275-9898 or e-mail
