Say No to Hate and Fear

Free Expression

The University is committed to an environment that encourages, promotes, and protects free inquiry and free expression. The Harassment and Discrimination Policy is not intended to restrict freedom of speech or any legitimate form of artistic or visual expression. The policy is not intended to restrict discussion and debate in the classroom or academic forum. While the protection of free expression, especially in an academic community, should be taken into account in administering the policy, it does not include protecting acts of harassment and discrimination.

Acceptance and Appreciation of Difference

Developing acceptance and appreciation of difference involves a developmental process that occurs through effort, communication and participation. It begins by addressing our individual and communal attitudes and beliefs toward others. By doing so, we can identify how intolerance and discrimination may limit our personal interactions and accomplishments.

Recognizing Intolerance

Acts of intolerance and discrimination may take many forms, including anonymous as well as overt behavior. Such behaviors may include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal or written messages of intimidation
  • Graffiti
  • Vandalism targeting the property or message of a particular group
  • Exclusion or denial of services, resources, or access
