The River Campus has Yellowjacket Weekend to kick off the new school year in a festive way.
But the Eastman School, at least in recent memory, hasn’t had a similar tradition.
That’s about to change.
Eastman this fall will kick off the school year with a series of programs and activities called Welcome Weekend designed to engage students, create community, build spirit, and allow students to experience Rochester.
And, organizers hope, create a new fall tradition for the school. Melissia Schmidt, the Eastman School’s assistant dean of student life, proposed Welcome Weekend because “it is important for students to see how vibrant their campus is, to engage with other students, faculty, and staff, and to feel part of the campus community and the Rochester community.”
Here’s the schedule:
Tuesday, Sept. 4 (first day of classes): Students, faculty, and staff are invited to the grand reopening of the newly renovated Eastman Dining Center for dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. The dining center has undergone several upgrades this summer, including new carpeting and furniture. Dinner will be served by some of Eastman’s deans. There also will be music and giveaways.
Thursday, Sept. 6: Students, faculty, and staff will attend Eastman’s annual Convocation at 2:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. Douglas Lowry, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School, and University President Joel Seligman will give welcome addresses. A faculty performance by Federico Agostini, professor of violin, will conclude the traditional event signaling the start of the academic year.
Friday, Sept. 7: A carnival from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Student Living Center Courtyard will include a henna artist, a psychic, photo booth, a bounce house, free Coke beverages, and free ice cream from Lugia’s. Eastman students can get their limited edition long-sleeved T-shirt and enter a raffle for a Kindle.
Saturday, Sept. 8-9: Students can experience the Clothesline Festival, Rochester’s largest and longest-running arts and crafts festival and biggest fundraiser for the Memorial Art Gallery.
Free tickets for Eastman graduate and undergraduate students will be available in the Office of Student Life. Students can ride the free shuttle bus from the East End Garage at East Main and Scio streets.
Welcome Weekend culminates with popcorn, cotton candy, and a showing of The Avengers on the inflatable big screen at 9 p.m. in the Student Living Center Courtyard.
