Dean, Eastman School of Music

Opened in 1922, the Eastman Theatre was built by Eastman Kodak Company founder George Eastman as a center "for the enrichment of community life," as inscribed on the facade. Its rich history includes performances by the greatest musicians of our time, from George Gershwin and Igor Stravinsky to Yo-Yo Ma and Renée Fleming '83E (MM), as well as eight decades of performances by the world's most talented young musicians - the students of the Eastman School of Music.

The tradition has continued for more than 85 years. Recently, a new chapter was begun that will finally bring to completion George Eastman's vision for the Theatre and for the School. In addition to dramatic improvements to the existing Theatre, a substantial addition will include a 230-seat recital hall, faculty teaching studios, a new rehearsal room, and a new recording control suite on the upper floors.

This new integrated facility will enable the Eastman School to continue to build on its reputation as the nation's premier music school. It is the right project at the right time for the Eastman School of Music and for the Rochester community. It addresses critical needs for students and faculty, bolsters our ability to sustain and enhance world-class teaching and performance, and reaffirm the Eastman School's commitment to enlivening downtown Rochester as a center for arts and culture.

We salute our partners at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and in the Rochester community who have joined us in completing George Eastman's vision.

For more than 85 years, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been proud to call the magnificent Eastman Theatre its home. Each year, more than 125,000 young people and adults experience firsthand the sounds of the RPO performed in this awe-inspiring space.

Our collaboration with the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester to update, renovate, and expand the Eastman Theatre complex will transform the historic silent movie theatre into a world-class concert hall for the 21st century. Beyond the bricks and mortar, a more intimate and acoustically enhanced space with superb new patron amenities will transform the entire concert-going experience for our future audiences, the students of the Eastman School, and the entire Rochester community. This monumental undertaking will be made possible by the power of collaboration.

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Eastman School of Music have been linked inextricably since their founding by the visionary George Eastman. How pleased he would be to know, more than 85 years later, that these two institutions he loved so deeply would be thriving, respected throughout the world, and united in this unprecedented effort.

The RPO family salutes our partners at the University of Rochester as we eagerly begin the countdown to Opening Night!
