As you may be aware of, GOG has elected its E-Board members for the 2012-13 academic year and had its first meeting on the 19th of October.  You can see who’s who on the E-Board by looking under the GOG officers link under the Info tab.

Our new E-Board is excited to serve up great events and much needed support during the academic year.  We have a pretty good lineup for social events for this semester, but we welcome suggestions from the graduate community.  If you guys have ideas, we want to know them!

Our new advocacy officer is working on a grievance that some students have with the new bus scheduling, particularly on the Blue Line. We will update on this periodically throughout the semester as this develops.  If at any time you have an important issue with the University that needs to be addressed, we will be there to support you to the best of our ability. GOG has your back!

As your new IT Officer, I will try to keep you guys as informed and up-to-date as possible with minutes from our meetings, Facebook invites to events, and short summaries of goings-on like this one on our News page.

It’s finally summer in Rochester, and we at GOG believe in enjoying it to the fullest. So come join us for a trip to Darien Lake, the theme park and water park resort, located south of the New York State Thruway (I-90) on State Highway 77. With rollercoasters, thrill rides, kiddie rides and waterslides, there’s something for everyone, including your family and friends.

To make the trip even more fun, GOG is slashing entry tickets from $45 to $10 and offering free bus rides to and from Darien Lake. Because of limited seats, registration is  compulsory with $10 per person and will take place on Wednesday (6th June) and Thursday (7th June) between 5 pm and 6 pm at Goergen Atrium.

There has been a change in the Health Insurance Policy, the main changes are the starting date of the insurance plan, now August 1st and the fact that to obtain a Waiver for the University-sponsored plan is going to be a more controlled process since there has been a number of students that have been found with little or no coverage at all.

Health Insurance for Graduating Students
Graduating students should check their health insurance status to assure continuing coverage and access to health care following graduation. All full-time students who paid the mandatory health fee in the spring semester can continue to receive primary care services at UHS through Aug. 31. Graduating full-time students who are covered by the University-sponsored Aetna Student Health Insurance are covered through Aug. 31. If you are covered by another insurance plan, UHS recommends checking with your insurance company to determine if your coverage ends at graduation or if you can continue on the plan. Due to changes in the health care reform law, many young adults can remain on their parent’s health insurance plan until their 26th birthday if the policy covers dependent children.

Marc Bousquet (of *How the University Works* fame) to give a talk here at Syracuse University. That will be next Thursday, April 5, at 4:00 p.m. in Crouse-Hinds Hall, room 010. Bousquet is sort of a folk hero, not only for grad students, but for marginalized workers in the groves of academe generally. On the theory that some in Rochester might be moved to make the trip, I thought I would alert you to the event and ask for your assistance in publicizing it to the GOG membership.
