There has been a change in the Health Insurance Policy, the main changes are the starting date of the insurance plan, now August 1st and the fact that to obtain a Waiver for the University-sponsored plan is going to be a more controlled process since there has been a number of students that have been found with little or no coverage at all.

Below is a copy of the news that we received:

Health Insurance News

Significant Changes Coming to Health Insurance for 2012–13
Changes in the health insurance requirements for full-time students for 2012–13 were announced earlier this year. The coverage year will be Aug.1 to July 31.University criteria for waivers will be stricter to assure students have adequate insurance coverage. All requests for waivers from U.S. insurance companies will be audited to assure compliance with the criteria. Insurance through international-based insurance plans generally will not meet University criteria for waiver. Students with an international insurance company must submit a written appeal by Aug. 15 if their plan meets all of the University criteria. For more information about the changes to the insurance requirement, check “Health Insurance for Full-time Students” on the UHS website.

Online Health Insurance Process Required for All Full-Time Students
Every year all full-time students must complete the online Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Process. Students are encouraged to complete the process by June 30 to assure accurate billing on the July billing statement. The online site is expected to be open on May 15. You will receive an email message letting you know the site is ready. Completing the online insurance process is especially important if you will be covered by your parent’s or your own insurance. Students with international-based plans who want to waive the University-sponsored insurance must submit a written appeal for waiver by Aug. 15.

Health Insurance for Graduating Students
Graduating students should check their health insurance status to assure continuing coverage and access to health care following graduation. All full-time students who paid the mandatory health fee in the spring semester can continue to receive primary care services at UHS through Aug. 31. Graduating full-time students who are covered by the University-sponsored Aetna Student Health Insurance are covered through Aug. 31. If you are covered by another insurance plan, UHS recommends checking with your insurance company to determine if your coverage ends at graduation or if you can continue on the plan. Due to changes in the health care reform law, many young adults can remain on their parent’s health insurance plan until their 26th birthday if the policy covers dependent children.

We also remind you that you can check this and all other events at the calendar on the right —>

Marc Bousquet (of *How the University Works* fame) to give a talk here at Syracuse University. That will be next Thursday, April 5, at 4:00 p.m. in Crouse-Hinds Hall, room 010. Bousquet is sort of a folk hero, not only for grad students, but for marginalized workers in the groves of academe generally. On the theory that some in Rochester might be moved to make the trip, I thought I would alert you to the event and ask for your assistance in publicizing it to the GOG membership. I’ve attached a flier and campus map. The registration link is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B9QTCZ6
