GOG Minutes 4/13/04
There were a lot of new faces at Thursday's meeting.
Welcome to all of you!
It's always good to see the faces we know as well!
The meeting was held on the first floor of Rhush Rhees Library.
It wasn't held in the new GOG office,
but it was nice to be close by.
After the meeting, anyone that wanted to see the office was welcomed to do so.
Ellen's Agenda was a nice touch, which kept us on track (see below).
We certainly had a lot to discuss.
The pizza and drinks were also nice.
Social Committee
What they've done to date:
Ski trip
Skating
Spot Cafe
All of these events were well attended with 40-60 people each.
3 upcoming events:
Raffle lottery- theater tickets will be up for grabs this Thursday. Mikhail is in charge of the event. 20 winners will each get two tickets to the Downstairs Cabaret Theater!
Bowling- next Thursday the 22nd
Wine and cheese- end of year April 30th Friday at 6pm
-Many assignments were assigned at the meeting. They included buying the wine, taking photographs, set up as well as clean up, serving the wine, etc. Brijesh (brijp@pas.rochester.edu) is the contact person for this event.
-A suggestion was made on having the Midnight Ramblers, an on campus men's accapela group, be entertainment. But more people seemed fond with the idea of a Jazz quartet. Jon and Jose may be good sources of advise for entertainment.
-Another suggestion made involved moving the area of band location from the back of the Wells-Brown room to the front, closer to the entrance. This might cut down on lines.
-A question about liquor licensing and whether it was required was brought up?
It may be the case that if all the attendees are grad students then you don't need a license. Ellen will verify.
-Catering this year will not be through Aramark, as we ran out of cheese early in the event. A suggestion was made for Lorraine's Lunch Basket. Wegman's is also a major consideration.
Forum Sponsored Events
Nic gave us an update on the Forum Committee. Currently it has a surplus of $1000 dollars.
Loathsome lecture had a good turn out
Sue. B. Institute Conference also had a good turn out
The search to make it easier for International Students to obtain driver licenses continues.
-All students will be emailed in order for them to fill out a questionnaire. They will be directed to go online to the GOG website to do so. This effort may be combined with some sort of lottery.
Future plans:
-Lectures that teach students how to give effective presentations
-Teach students how to get jobs outside of academia once they leave grad school
-The committee is always interested in ideas from you that will help promote discussions between all graduate level students i.e. interdisciplinary.
Advocacy Committee
Have been focused on getting the GOG lounge
Now the job of getting it furnished is at hand. No lounge community meeting yet
Waiting for prior owner to move out took long.
Requirement to use approved vendors makes it harder to get it furnished
Our Advisor Brian Fleming, suggested using Res Life, who buys their furniture through Adden Company
What do you think we need in the lounge to get you to use it?
Newsletter
Last time 6 pages were printed. This time it will be about 4 pages
It will include:

-Jonathan's trip to Washington D.C.
-Brian Fleming will discuss Res Life
-Pics from past GOG events (jpeg, tif files)
-Please send in pictures or anything you may have to Jonathan (roeh@mail.rochester.edu)
-If you do, he needs it a week and a half before wine and cheese event (April 30th) to hand out copies there
