Meliora - Ever Better

AS&E Graduate Student Association

Welcome to the University of Rochester

Welcome to Rochester! You are part of an institution that began back in 1850 when the Baptist Education Society failed in their attempt to move Madison University (now Colgate University) from Hamilton, New York to Rochester. Today, that fledgling university has grown into the cultural, academic, and economic heart of Rochester, and ranks among the top universities in the United States. These achievements would not have been possible without the philanthropic support of many historical figures, including George Eastman (founder of Kodak) and Joseph C. Wilson (founder of Xerox). As a result of this generosity the University now boasts five Nobel laureates, Grammy-award winning singers, and a Pulitzer-prize winning author among its alumni, to name just a few.

This tradition of excellence is embodied in the University’s Latin motto, “Meliora,” which means “Ever Better.” The 4,600 graduate students are a testament to this motto. We represent 40 doctoral and 70 masters programs throughout the University’s six schools. Our diversity means we will each have unique experiences and challenges. However, we all still have many common needs, interests, and a passion for knowledge that unites us.

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) exists to act as an advocate and liaison for, and to promote interaction among, the graduate students in departments of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at the University of Rochester. Let us know what we can be doing for you.
