Figures 23 - 24: These two photographs were chosen by the Corcoran Gallery's curators for the 1985 exhibit entitled The Indelible Image.
In spite of depicting horrific wounds, such as Rowland Ward's destroyed lower jaw, they selected the later printing of Private Riley's
photograph of his injured left leg in which a painted leaf masked his genitalia. The Corcoran also anonymized both soldiers in
their exhibit, although their names had been attached to their pictures for the preceding 120 years (SP 186, 117).
