Within 24 hours of a sexual assault, you should go to the emergency room.

Emergency Room staff will be able to:

small stop sign Determine if you have been injured in any way, including internal injuries of which you may be unaware.

small stop sign Screen you for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

small stop sign Collect medical evidence for possible future prosecution.

You can get medical attention at the University Health Service, Strong Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, any other hospital, or private physician you may wish to go to. When you go for treatment, it is better to have a companion with you so you are not alone while waiting to be seen.

Tell the nursing staff that you have been sexually assaulted. You have a right to request that a physician collect evidence from your clothing and body. The gathering of evidence does not commit you to pursuing a complaint or prosecuting the assailant, but does preserve options.

Medical staff will ask if you wish to file a report, but you do not have to talk to the police or file a report if you do not want to.
