For some, the emotional impact of sexual assault may be immediate and short term. For others the effects may be long lasting. Many survivors find it helpful to talk to a counselor trained to understand and assist victims of sexual assault.

Each person decides how and when she or he wants to seek counseling. Some want help in recovering a sense of control over their lives, others want assistance in thinking through the pros and cons of reporting the assault, some want help deciding who will be the best support during recovery, and some ask for assistance in getting back on track academically.
