The University of Rochester is a member of Internet2, which is a consortium of over 200 Universities working with government and industry to develop and support advanced network applications. See http://www.internet2.edu for more information.

The University is also a member of Nysernet (New York State Education and Research Network). The University is connected to the Internet2 Abilene network and other regional, national and international research networks over the Nysernet R&E (Research and Education) network. The Nysernet R&E network is a gigabit ethernet network transported over a statewide optical transport network. See http://www.nysernet.org for more information.

The University currently has a 200mbps ethernet connection to Nysernet which is transported over the UR optical network.

The University has recently become a member of the Northeast LambdaRail which is a new initiative for providing support for computational research computing through an extremely high bandwidth optical network infrastructure in the Northeast United States as part of the National LambdaRail Project. See http://www.nelr.net for more information.

The University's connection to these advanced research networks is intended to support advanced research applications by linking researchers to peers in other institutions over high speed network connections. A by-product of this is that it benefits the entire university in that *all* UR network traffic destined for Internet2 connected institutions will take this faster route instead of using the commercial Internet.
