University of Rochester Wins Global CIO 100 Award
June 15, 2006
The University of Rochester has been named a recipient of the 2006 CIO 100 award, presented by CIO magazine to organizations that demonstrate the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).
The University was recognized for its URNet expansion project. Acting like a “backbone,” UR Net is the University’s IT network providing high-speed connections to the Internet and among the University’s many departmental and “local” computer networks. It is designed to support the increasing use of computer networks by faculty, students, and staff throughout the University and its off-site locations. In May 2005, the University became the first higher education institution in a metropolitan area of New York State to complete an optical network.
“We took a very innovative, cost effective approach to connecting the University’s diverse physical locations by combining our existing infrastructure with leased dark fiber optic capacity from Fibertech Networks and optical networking equipment from Cisco,” said David Lewis, Vice Provost and Chief Information Officer for the University of Rochester. “We are now uniquely positioned to provide the level of high network bandwidth required to support the complex needs of a leading research university with a premier regional medical center.”
CIO 100 Awards are based on innovation, business value, collaboration, and leadership. Recipients are nominated and must provide detailed descriptions of their projects and results. The submissions are reviewed by teams of CIO magazine editors and writers who vote on the final 100. The University of Rochester was nominated by Fibertech Networks.
According to Abbie Lundberg, Editor in Chief of CIO magazine, “Year after year, the CIO 100 award recipients serve as industry role models for business and IT excellence. This year’s winners are particularly remarkable for their ability to translate IT innovation into business value and solid ROI.” The 19th annual CIO 100 recognized and honored 100 companies that truly exemplify an innovative enterprise that uses IT to create business value.
The 100 honorees, which include companies like Dell Inc., Pfizer Inc., and FedEx Ground Packages System Inc., will be listed in the Aug. 15 issue of CIO magazine. The awards will be presented at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, Calif. on Aug. 22 at the conclusion of the eighth annual CIO Symposium and awards ceremony. Lewis will be accepting the award on behalf of the University of Rochester.
